The different types of industrial hoists

Home » The different types of industrial hoists

In the industrial sector, hoists play a key role in lifting and transporting goods, materials and equipment.

These rugged and reliable machines are designed to simplify handling operations inside industrial buildings, warehouses and production sites.

There are different types of industrial hoists, each with specific features and functionality.

In this article, we will explore the three main types of industrial hoists: the electric hoist, the hydraulic hoist, and the scissor lift.

Electric freight elevator

The electric hoist is one of the most common and popular types of industrial hoists. It works with a system of electric motors that drive the rope lifting mechanism.

Advantages of electric hoist:
High lifting speed, no limit on lifting height and low power used are the main advantages of this lifting system.
They are ideal for applications requiring rapid and continuous lifting, such as in automated warehouses and industrial plants.

Disadvantages of the electric freight elevator:
Costly in the case of runs up to 15 meters in height and for capacities above 1000Kg. It is not the most suitable lifting system for heavy work where strength and high capacities are required.

Hydraulic freight elevator

The hydraulic hoist relies on the reliable hydraulic principle for its operation. This type of hoist consists of hydraulic cylinders driven by a hydraulic power unit and uses a chain hoist system.

Advantages of the hydraulic hoist:
It is the most versatile system in the industrial field that can achieve very high flow rates with high efficiency and reliability. It proves economically successful for runs up to 15 meters. They find use in a wide range of industries, including shipyards, container yards, heavy manufacturing plants and storage facilities.

Disadvantages of the hydraulic hoist:
It has a lower lifting speed than electric, and is not suitable for travel over 15 meters due to the construction complexity of hydraulic cylinders.

Scissor lifts

Scissor hoist, also called scissor lifts or scissor platforms, is a type of hoist that lifts loads by extending a scissor mechanism driven by hydraulic cylinders.

This type of hoist is designed primarily for lifting light loads over limited heights.

Advantages of the scissor lift:
Due to its construction, it does not require anchor walls and can be easily moved to different work areas. They are often used in applications such as plant maintenance, racking, loading and unloading vans, and moving goods inside industrial buildings.

Disadvantages of the scissor lift:
Suitable mainly for short runs, due to lack of anchors makes it unstable with fully extended scissor, low operating speed.

In conclusion, industrial hoists are essential for simplifying lifting and transport operations in industrial facilities.

The choice of hoist type depends on the specific needs of the application, such as lifting capacity, speed, power accessibility, and workspace size.

Whether electric, hydraulic, or scissor lifts, it is important to select the most suitable type of lift to maximize efficiency and ensure safety during industrial operations.
